WHAT is Cello Choir?
The Austin Cello Choir is a musical ensemble comprised entirely of cellos and membership is open to all students of the cello at ALL LEVELS and at ALL AGES from as young as 10 to 80 years. Some of us have been playing for decades while others are advancing quickly in their first year of studying the instrument. Cellist Tony Rogers has been the director since 2012 and arranges most of the music the group performs. Every semester is different and concludes with a final concert of all new music, aiming to be widest variety of music you may never hear again performed on a cello, or 20 cellos! ALL LEVELS! Parts are especially created for less experienced players ensuring that everyone can play! From "First Position to Thumb Position". To further help, every part is recorded and shared with the members for at home practice.
Playing in cello choir is a blast! With its large musical range the cello can carry all the parts of song--melody, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, and bass. Players choose parts at their will and are encouraged to choose more challenging sections as they improve, and again, all parts are recorded for students to practice along to.
Tony Rogers has been assembling cello ensembles of varying sizes for most of his life, first with the North Texas Cello Quartet, later as the founder of the in 2006, started as director of the Austin Cello Choir, and during the Pandemic he created the , bringing cellists all over the world together.
